Evaluation for 5.E.4c
Materials include a variety of activities and/or resources for students to develop, practice, and reinforce grade-level morphological skills (through cumulative review). (PR 2.A.1 & 2.A.3) (S)
The grade 3 material offers activities and resources designed to help develop students' morphological skills, which span over several weeks throughout the year. For example, on Day 1 of Week 14, the teacher is directed to say, "Last week we read and spelled words with prefixes. I will say a word aloud. You will repeat the word and then tell me the prefix you hear. Say the following words aloud: nonfiction (non-), impossible (im-), reopen (re-), disagree (dis-), misplace (mis-), unpleasant (un-), inconvenient (in-). Then have students work with a partner and share a sentence using one of the words. Students may add a suffix to change the meaning of the word. On Day 2 of the same week, the materials suggest that the teacher guide students by reading a short decodable text that requires the addition of suffixes, such as -or and -er, to comprehend the narrative. For example, on Day 1 of Week 11, the teacher's "Jump In" activity says, "I will say a word and you will repeat the word. Then you will write the prefix or suffix you hear on a Syllable Board and hold your board in the air. Say these words aloud one at a time: unknown, stepped, impractical, indirect, washes, reread, trusted, reaching, voted, unfair, tigers. After each word is read aloud and students write the prefix or suffix, invite a volunteer to define the word and use it in a sentence. Additionally, in their READ Books, students learn about suffixes in the Week 14 "You Do" activity by writing definitions as they are introduced, creating a chart that helps solidify their understanding. The curriculum also incorporates cumulative reviews to reinforce the concepts that have been learned. For example, in Week 20, Day 3, students review previously taught affixes by sharing words with partners and categorizing them based on their prefixes and suffixes. Similarly, on Day 1 of Week 23, students demonstrate their knowledge by writing down prefixes and suffixes corresponding to the given meanings. Overall, the materials are designed to provide a comprehensive and interactive approach to learning morphological skills, encouraging collaboration and application in real-world contexts.
