The Lowman Education RLA materials support students' coherent use of the elements of the writing process to compose text, which includes an age-appropriate progression in the conventions of writing. In Unit 9: "Inquiry and Research," students begin drafting a research essay by selecting a topic and generating questions on Day 1. After reviewing a list of informative and argumentative topics, students create a KWS chart (What I Know, What I Want to Know, and Sources I Need) to help narrow their focus and guide planning. On Day 2, students finalize their research question and develop a detailed research plan that includes the topic, purpose, main research question, secondary questions, intended audience, and necessary resources. To support their argument, students use a thesis/claim checklist and are provided with an exemplar outline to organize their research according to the chosen essay structure. By Day 7, students begin drafting their essays with guidance to remain focused on the purpose, follow the outline, consider the intended audience and use appropriate language, include an introduction and conclusion with a clearly stated thesis or claim, and use transitions to connect ideas. On Days 8 and 9, students revise their drafts to incorporate text citations. Slides 5 and 6 present a bulleted list of revision strategies, such as adding or deleting details, strengthening introductions and conclusions, selecting more precise words, varying sentence structures, and combining ideas. Slide 7 offers editing support, highlighting the importance of complete sentences, subject-verb agreement, verb tense consistency, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and grammar. By Day 10, students actively engage in the revising and editing stages of the writing process. On Day 11, they prepare to share and publish their research essays by creating multimodal presentations. Finally, on Day 12, students present their projects and read their essays aloud, sharing their research with peers.
